Top Ten Tuesday ~ Halloween Spirit

Top Ten Tuesday
Top Ten Books to Put You in the Halloween Spirit

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme brought you by The Broke and the Bookish.

The Shining The Shining by Stephen King: I am sure you are all tired of my extolling the virtues of the King, but I can't leave him out of this line-up.

It by Stephen King: Another oldie but goodie.

The Witching Hour by Anne Rice: This is a book I could read over and over again.  I love the section on the Mayfair Witches, the Talmasca report, where it is just the Mayfair Witches through the years, the history of the family.

The Pumpkin Man by John Everson: I read this book last year and it freaked me out!!  So scary. I am rereading it this week as well, it just seemed like a perfect book to read the week before Halloween.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollowhttp://www.amazon.com/Legend-Sleepy-Hollow-Washington-Irving/dp/0615640109 by Washington Irving: "Odds Bodkins, Gadzooks, look at that old spook of spooks!" Yes,a lot of my knowledge comes from Disney- and this is no exception.  I grew up watching the Disney version of this tale every Halloween - so much so that my brother and I can quote most of it still to this day. When I got older, I also read the book. This is the book that means Halloween to me.

Salem's Lot by Stephen King: Yes, another Stephen King. He is definitely the King of Horror!

Those Across the River by Christopher Buehlman:  I read this last year and I loved it! Such an awesome werewolf book!

Book of Shadows by Cate Tiernan: I devoured these books last year. They were a fun series to read.  I liked the setting and the magic aspect, although the main character annoyed me. Lol.

The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson: Foggy London, ghosts, Jack the Ripper!

It's The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown by Charles Schultz: Can any list be complete without this classic?

What about you? Any of these on your list? What books put you in the Halloween Spirit?

  1. I read Sleepy Hollow but was not really scared by it. This Halloween, I may be watching the movie though.

    1. I wouldn't say I was scared of it - but it is such a family tradition to watch the Disney cartoon at Halloween that this movie really feels like Halloween. :) The Johnny Depp version is pretty good too. Hope you enjoy whichever movie you are watching! :)

  2. We did not see the Great pumpkin yet this year:( Also, I love the Sleepy hallow book at Halloween. It was one of my fave "kids" stories growing up.

    1. I watched the Great Pumpkin at work the other day as I was shelving books. ;) A class was watching it as a reward so I tuned in with them. And yay for Sleepy Hollow! :)

  3. Ok, I really need to read Stephen King. I'm hoping to read The Shining this weekend, or sometime before Halloween, so fingers crossed! And I've heard great things about the Sweep series and The Name of the Star.

    Great picks!

    1. Bag of Bones is really good too, more like a traditional ghost story. If you watched the tv movie, the book is ten times better!

  4. I've only read the Stephen King books on your list. I read a bunch of Anne Rice back in the day, but not that particular one. I could use some spooky reads this time of year :)

    1. The Witching Hour is cool, because it follows the Mayfair family - there is a whole section that is a timeline. That part makes me love the book. I think I liked her witch series better than her vampire series. :)

  6. I really need to read The Name of the Star. I just need to find the time :( I am voting for a four day work week - then I would have a whole 'nother day to read every week!

    1. I would vote for that! I feel really pressed for time right now too, and I really want to just dive into The Diviners and not come up for air until I am finished reading it. :)

  7. I was going to say that I can't read any of the Halloween-y books but I take that back. The Charlie Brown book is such a charmer. :-)

I love hearing from people, don't be shy! I would love to hear what you think! I always reply back, although it takes me a bit longer these days due to the little guy.
