It's Monday, What Are You Reading? is a weekly meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journey, that is guaranteed to add to your reading list.
Yay!!! Summer vacation officially began last Friday! Three months of reading and blogging lie ahead! I also scored some free books from my stepmom Shellie!
Read Last Week:
Finding Me by Michelle Knight: What a sad sad book. It was very difficult to read in places.
The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer: I am probably one of the only people who think this, but I didn't really care for this book. I get that the title is ironic, but..these characters were so smug and boring and pathetic at times! Review soon.
This One Summer by Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki: Another book I didn't quite get the subtleties of I guess. The art work was gorgeous, and much of the book was really good, but it fell sort of flat at the end.
Reading This Week:
Red-Tails in Love by Marie Winn: From the Shellie pile. You might be able to tell from my blog name that I love birds! Lol. I love the movie The Big Year, I could watch it every day. I spotted this on Shellie's shelves, and knew it was going home with me. I am loving it so far!
Eleanor and Park by Rainbow Rowell: Our book club book for the month. I have heard good things!
Midnight Crossroad by Charlaine Harris: I don't know what I am getting into here. I never read the last Sookie book, they got so bad. But here I am, giving Harris' new series a try.
I hope you enjoy Eleanor & Park. I read it with my book group last summer and we all loved it.
ReplyDeleteThe Interestings did not sound appealing to me. Sometimes a book gets a lot of positive reviews and hype in the publishing/library world but it just isn't for everyone and that may be the case here.
I am curious about Finding Me but I can understand that it would be difficult to read about everything she went through. The book has a lot of holds on it at my library.
Enjoy your summer vacation!
Oh good!! I am glad to hear it!
DeleteMaybe that is what happened. I just really didn't like it. :(
It was quite the read. I felt so horrible for her, but she says some things that I think are important for people to read. I will be posting about it, but it won't be like a real review - I don't think that would be appropriate for this kind of book.
I don't think I could handle Finding Me. What a terribly sad story. I can only imagine how difficult it must have been to read.
ReplyDeleteIt made me cry in some parts - what an awful tragedy. It was hard to read but some of the things she said, I feel are really important for people to read.
DeleteEleanor and Park is supposed to be really good- but then I rarely hear anything bad about her stuff. I should read another of her books soon...
ReplyDeleteOh good!! I have never read anything by her before, this will be my first. :)
DeleteStill Alice is good. I think you'll like it. Your step-mother gave you some interesting books! I've been looking at Tell the Wolves I'm Home.
ReplyDeleteI was so excited to get them! I am glad to hear that about Still Alice. I don't think I have read anything by Munro before, so perhaps this book will give me a new author to read. :)
DeleteNice stack of books. ENJOY Summer!!!
ReplyDeleteI retired from teaching two years ago, but I still remember how wonderful summer was. Now it is summer vacation ALL THE TIME. :)
Have a great reading week. Looks like you have some good books ready to go.

My It's Monday, What Are You Reading
Thanks!!!!
DeleteLol! Isn't it the best feeling? Freedom! I feel like one of the students every June. :)
Yay for retirement! My dad retired from education a few years ago too - now he travels all the time. So he must be on the summer everyday plan as well. :)
I used to work in elementary SpEd and I remember enjoying the thrill of summer vacation, but missing the kids by August. Now I am retired early on disability and get to read as much as I can, though not as much as people would think, maybe 3 books a week. I have Finding Me on my wishlist (saw her on a tv show promoting the book and realize it will be very sad, but if she wants to share her story as therapy, some of us should read it). Still Alice--loved it! Another book people should read and talk about. I've read Anne Tyler in the past, and have one of her older ones on my kindle now. Enjoy your week (s); hope it is relaxing and fun!
ReplyDeleteI do love my job - but by June, I am ready for the summer!
DeleteI agree, Finding Me was sad, but deserves to be read. Her voice should be heard after being silenced for so long.
My sister teaches 2nd grade and is counting the days until her summer vacation starts...another week and a half to go for her! Your summer is starting off with some great books. Tell the Wolves I'm Home was one of my favorites last year. Sorry you didn't get on with The Interestings - I'll look forward to your thoughts. I want to read (or maybe listen to) Eleanor & Park soon.
ReplyDeleteEleanor and Park - so good!!
DeleteI have heard great things about Tell the Wolves I'm Home, I can't wait to start it. :)
Woohoo! Grats on summer vacation. I am so excited for you to be reading Eleanor & Park--I mostly liked but but there were a few little things that bugged me. Looking forward to hearing what you think of it. ;)
ReplyDeleteGlamorous Book Lounge
I loved Eleanor and Park - but there were some things that bugged me too!! I wonder if they are the same.
DeleteI love having family members to share books with. It's so nice to know you have someone to read that book you had to discuss with someone!
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the beginning of vacation and all of your fantastic books!
Yes, it is a built in book club when your family reads too! :)
DeleteThanks!
Enjoy that vacation and all the great books you have stored up for yourself!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteIsn't summer wonderful?? I love reading and blogging out on my front porch (although now there's a rainstorm blowing through). I just checked Eleanor & Park out of the library last week. I hope you enjoy it as much as I plan to!
ReplyDeleteNow I have to pop over to see if you reviewed it. It was really good I thought!
DeleteI haven't read any of these books, but Charlain Harris' new series sounds interesting :)
ReplyDeleteI was pleasantly surprised!! I really did enjoy it, although it rambled.
