It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date
I hope everyone had a great November, and Thanksgiving if you celebrate! My month has been spent doing a ton of homework and hanging out with the family. Our Thanksgiving was a little unconventional this year; my family had various illnesses so we split up, and had little individual Thanksgivings. It was just the three of us for dinner! Wyatt really loved the cheesy potatoes the best. Friday I spent lazing about the house with the boy and husband, and it was nice. Billy actually went out early and got us a doorbuster television from Best Buy; ours was going and he got us a great new tv for under $300! Saturday was completely different - we went on an Owl Prowl at our favorite metropark. Usually there are 50 people there; this year, it was just Billy and I and one of the park rangers we know! It was pretty cool - we spent a long time tromping through the woods in the dark, calling for owls. We heard so many and a few flew in close, but we never could spot them entirely. It was pretty cool walking around the woods and fields in the dark, bu I have to admit, my overactive imagination started going crazy and I got a little spooked!! We had a great time out together. We have weird date nights, I guess. Lol. I also spent the weekend watching the Gilmore Girls revival - anyone else watch it? What the what was that ending!!!!
Read Last Week/Reading This Week:
So, I have had to really focus on school work, these classes kill me, so I am reading a lot of articles and books. We have read some really fascinating things, and I am sharing the two books with you. I am not linking the articles although if anyone is interested let me know! These two books have some great information in them, and both are written in a way that is easy to read, and is actually interesting, unlike some material that you read for school.
Watching:
Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Longmire (holy crap I love this show!!), and I am going to start watching Good Girls Revolt. And of course, it is now the Christmas season! I can't wait to start watching Christmas movies with the kiddo!
Happy Thanksgiving! Sounds like you had a good one. An owl prowl sounds so fun- need to try that some time. I love owls and I think it would be fascinating. Think we have one around here, have heard it hooting a few times, but haven't seen it.
ReplyDeleteBoth of those books look good, and kinda timely right now. Hope you have a great week. and congrats on the TV!
My classes and readings are very topical and seasonal right now! It just worked out that way - I am taking Anthropology of Food, and Anthropology of Food and Culutue, which explores how and why people eat food, rather than actual food. Like Proust's Madelines. :)
DeleteThe owl prowl was really cool! If you know what kind of owl you have nearby, this is a good time to try to draw it in to see it. What they interpreters do for these prowls is go out when the owls are calling, and they play a recording of the same type of owl calling, then turn it off and wait. They do this off and on. You have to listen for their calls and watch for them to fly in, which is harder than it seems! Owls have soundless flight so you won't hear them fly in. It's kind of neat, and if you have one nearby, it seems like it would be possible to do yourself!
Thanks for letting me know! I may try that. Our backyard gets really dark at night so maybe I'll camp out there for a bit and see if I can see him. I know it's probably a long shot but I'd be tickled to see one so close to home!
DeleteIt's fun to spend the holiday season with a little guy, isn't it? :) You get to see things through their eyes and enjoy it even more. I would love an owl prowl, never heard of one, but I guess you have to live in the correct region for it. I love Longmire too but have sadly watched all the available seasons, so waiting for more eventually.
ReplyDeleteWhat are you going to school for, work or pleasure? You're a school librarian, correct? Or am I thinking of another blogger? :) Have a great week ahead. Introduce Wyatt to Rudolph and Frosty and Santa Claus and the gang lol.
Yes, it is certainly a different holiday with a child- I love seeing everything as new again. :) Rita, you probably could have one, I just assume it would be different types of owls! :) Hmm, now I am curious....
DeleteWe have powered through Longmire like tv addicts - we are almost through them all. Nooooooo! I can't believe the new season will be the last. :(
I ran the school library as a paraprofessional when I was working. I loved that job!!!! Our district decided they didn't need librarians anymore, if they could pay paras less to do the same job, minus the teaching. It's a shame that money talks like that, even in schools, but I did a really good job when I worked there if I do say so myself! :) I loved that job though, and the library, and the kids, so that made it easy. Right now I am taking classes more for pleasure, although it started with me getting a second Bachelors degree, this time in Journalism. I have sort of gotten off track, and am taking classes for fun!! I need to focus, but I think I will just get a certificate in paralegal studies, which is what I am doing now. I work a big time 8 hours a week at my cousin's law firm. He is an attorney who has his own practice, and I work two days a week for four hours right now, while Wyatt is still little. I love it!
I'm glad you had a nice Thanksgiving despite a change from the norm. Ours was like that too. I didn't have a chance to watch the new Gilmore Girls but hope to start soon once the girls are back in school. How neat there's an Owl Prowl in your city. That's pretty darn cool.
ReplyDeleteIt was a great Thanksgiving, once I adjusted to the idea. It was kind of nice to be lazy and lounging all day! I loved the new GG! I had to adjust to that too, but once I did, I didn't want it to end. The owl prowl is pretty cool! Some years we see them, sometimes we don't but its always fun.
DeleteI've only seen one episode of Good Girls Revolt so far, but I really enjoyed it. However, it is definitely a show to watch when the kids aren't around!
ReplyDeleteGood to know!!! Wyatt is still a little dude but who knows what he is picking up! I am looking forward to watching it.
DeleteI remember one Boxing Day (our traditional equivalent of Black Friday) when my boyfriend woke up at the crack of dawn and trudged out in the dark to be at Best Buy before they opened, only to find that a crowd of people had been camped out in the snow for hours already - madness!!
ReplyDeleteI was shocked that my husband actually got the doorbuster at Best Buy! He left our house at 5 am (still ungodly early) and was 8th in line. Maybe with some stores opening earlier or even Thanksgiving, it has cut down on people camping out? I was positive he would get there, see people had been camping out, and just come home.
DeleteNative Roots looks interesting. Enjoy your books.
ReplyDeleteMy It's Monday! What Are You Reading? post.
It really is! The way it is written makes it an easier read than a traditional textbook type book, or nonfiction even.
DeleteHappy belated thanksgiving! I hope it was great. Glad to meet another Longmire fan! I love watching it. I'm so sad that next season will be the last. I don't want to say goodbye to Walt and the Gang. I hope you enjoy your reads and shows this week.

Thanks! I am not ready either!! We are halfway through season 4, and are already starting to ration out the episodes. :( I now know why the fans of Longmire campaigned hard to keep it on the air - I love it! Have you read the books? I was thinking I might read them after the series ends. :(
DeleteYour Thanksgiving sounds great, even if it wasn't what you're used to... the Owl Prowl sounds especially cool!
ReplyDeleteIt was a good weekend! It was a nice small Thanksgiving, but one I really had time to sit and reflect on. And the Owl Prowl was really cool!
DeleteThese books sound interesting! Here is my IMWAYR?: http://shoshireads.weebly.com/home/its-monday-what-are-you-reading8953090
