The Sunday Post/It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

The Sunday Post/It's Monday! What Are You Reading?

Check out the The Caffeinated Book Review for the Sunday Post
It's Monday! What Are You Reading is hosted by Kathryn at Book Date

So, I unintentionally fell off the map last week. Between starting a new job (my first in two years), classes starting, and life in general, things were a little too complicated for me!  I think I am starting to establish a good rhythm now though, so I am going to try this again. I apologize, I read everyone's comments from last week and appreciated them, and I am sorry I was unable to respond or visit your blogs. This week however, blogging is getting added back into the mix. I guess it is kind of like baking, you just keep folding stuff in and eventually it all works out.

My classes are so fascinating right now. I am taking two Anthropology classes - one is the Anthropology of food and culture, and the other is a Native American anthro class. We read some great articles last week, but the most powerful was written by Sherman Alexie, author of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian. I know this book was huge and award winning a few years ago, and I intended to read it, but never got to it. If it is anything like the small essay I read however, I am sure it is an amazing book. If you are interested, the article is I Hated Tonto (Still Do).

Read Last Week:

I didn't manage to finish anything - I did have one DNF and began two books that are so good that now I am not sure which will win the race for my vote. I have a feeling it will be the fiction book though. Lol.

Being a Beast by Charles Foster - this was a wee bit out there for me, conceptually. I didn't get very far, and although I really wanted to give it more of a go, I couldn't do it. Maybe I will try again in mid-winter.

Reading This Week:

Betrayals by Kelley Armstrong: Of these two, I will probably more than likely read this one this week. I love this series! (and Gabriel)

Under the Stars by Dan White: That is not to say that I don't love this one! I actually am really very much enjoying it. I think though that this one will become a slow read for me, here and there. My husband and I are actually going to mini-book club it as well.

Watching:

We are catching up on Sleepy Hollow. We are also watching The Goldbergs, which is hilarious and reminds us of when we were kids. My husband was appalled to learn that I have never seen The Goonies or E.T. For my age group, that is just nutty. They were like the two biggest hits. I also just saw Jaws for the very first time, and I loved it! What a great movie, for real. I expected something a lot cheesier, and while the special effects were (it was the 70s, not their fault), the movie itself was really well done. That scene where they are drinking at night in the boat, and Quint tells that story of his boat going down..masterful and chilling. My brother almost went to this crazy showing of Jaws last night - it was a few hours or so away, give or take, but they were showing Jaws on an inflatable floating screen, in a lake, at night! You had to watch it from inner tubes while floating on a black lake at night - no thank you!!!! Things didn't work out and he didn't end up going, but for me that is nightmarish. I have too crazy of an imagination. Lol.

  1. I haven't seen Jaws and I don't think I will. I definitely wouldn't want to watch it while floating in a lake! I did watch E.T. and The Goonies as a kid. I loved E.T. but I don't think I liked The Goonies.

Congratulations on the new job! Your classes sound interesting. I think I've read that article by Sherman Alexie before. I haven't read his books though I've been wanting to read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian for awhile now. Are you familiar with Debbie Reese? You might find her blog of interest. It focuses on the portrayal of Native Americans in children's books but also she recommends good resources. Very informative. https://americanindiansinchildrensliterature.blogspot.com/

    1. Thanks! My job is only a few hours a week, but it is nice to get out of the house and do something other than Mom. I thought I would hate it, but I love it!

Thanks for the blog tip - it does sound like a blog I would enjoy. I am excited to check it out.

Omg, I could never watch Jaws in the lake like that. Eek! I actually am not a fan of lakes too much to begin with, I am afraid of fish, so Jaws in a lake would be seriously terrifying for me! Lol.

  2. Congrats on the new job! I always loved anthropology so I think your classes sound interesting, especially the Native american one. So fascinating. I love thinking about america before it was all settled.

The Goonies is a trip! I love some of those old 80's movies. I'm fond of the Lost Boys too, I don't know if it's aged well but Kiefer Sutherland as a vamp and Jason Patric from Wayward Pines as a young guy, and it had Jami Gertz in it too... I like that movie. :) And Jaws I haven't seen in ages. That floating in the water watching on a lake sound like a blast, although yeah if anything happened to brush by underwater that could be nerve wracking!

    1. Thanks! It's just a few hours a week, but I love it! My classes are fascinating! I actually allowed myself the indulgence of taking two classes I didn't "need" for my new degree, and I am glad I did.

I loved Lost Boys! That was one of my favorites - I was at the right age though to have had a crush on Corey Haim. Now I need to rewatch that movie! I had forgotten that that was Jason Patric as well.

Yeah, I don't think I have the nerves for that!Although, it would be cool to say that you did.

  3. Your anthro classes sound so interesting. The Goonies rock! If you have access to the special DVD, there are interesting movie geek tidbits. What a way to watch Jaws. That is so trippy.

    1. My classes are super interesting this semester! It's a toss up which one I like better at this time. Right now, I am leaning toward the Native American class. I really need to watch The Goonies and E.T. It's time to right these wrongs! I feel like E.T. is going to make me cry. Lol.

I can't imagine doing something like that, although I do think if you could handle it, it would be pretty awesome. I am not that person though. Lol.

  4. I could NOT watch Jaws like that as I'm really shark phobic and can't watch them on TV or even listen to the music from the movies!

Don't stress about not getting around much as I think everyone's like that from time to time and can understand.

    1. I agree, you should never watch Jaws like that!! I am not even shark phobic and it scares the pants off me!

I feel so rude! Like people came over and I ignored them. Lol.

  5. I've listed Betrayals just last week on my TBR! Don't worry about not finishing any books... Neither did I!! I actually ended up not doing very much for most of the week. Even my Sunday Post is just a couple of Headlines... http://marelithalkink.blogspot.co.za/2016/09/the-sunday-post-when-headline-is-all.html

Hope you will have a good week and enjoy those classes!

    1. Thanks Mareli! I am loving Betrayals! I wish I had one of those time twisters sometimes that Hermione had in Harry Potter - just to read! Lol.

  7. I read Betrayals last week. Like you, I really like Gabriel. Have fun with your classes. I'm struggling to get back into a school year routine too. I'll have days when I don't even look at a book or my blog. Come see what I accomplished last week here. Happy reading!

    1. I am only part way through but I am loving the book! It is so hard to put it down - darn school and work! It's hard sometimes to find that rhythm again, but once you do, it is smooth sailing!

  9. Sherman Alexie is amazing! I read "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" in one sitting and have loved the short stories of his that I've read. I'm going to have to check out that essay!

  10. Sounds like you've got a lot going on right now, particularly now with the new job, but that you're making a great effort to fit in all that you enjoy - I hope that's an easy process, sometimes it just takes getting in to the hang of fitting everything in, routine even.

I hope you enjoy your upcoming reads, and that the new job is going well, and your classes stay interesting!

    1. It's a little crazy right now, but I hope to figure it all out!! Sometimes I think the more I have to schedule, the more productive I am. We shall see...lol.

      Thanks Jade!

  11. My goodness, sounds like you have a crazy schedule. Hope you're settling into a routine. Never seen E.T. or The Goonies? Sacrilege! Your husband needs to make you watch those soon. E.T. always seemed incredibly long to me but is so good. And The Goonies is loads of fun. :)

    1. I think I have a bit of a handle on when to do my homework - it seems easier to devote a little time every day rather than large chunks, at least right now.

Lol! That is pretty much what my husband said too - that it was sacrilege! It does need to be remedied. I am not super interested in E.T. but I think I could watch Goonies. Lol.

  12. Both The Goonies and ET are amazing. It's been years since I've seen either, but I feel like they would ago pretty well. Hope your classes and new job are going well. Happy reading!

I love hearing from people, don't be shy! I would love to hear what you think! I always reply back, although it takes me a bit longer these days due to the little guy.
